Makoko Floating School: When Architecture Meets Life on Water

When you hear the word school, you probably imagine a building standing firmly on land.

But in Makoko, Lagos, architects asked a different question:

What if a school could float?

The Makoko Floating School was developed by NLÉ, led by Nigerian architect Kunlé Adeyemi, as a prototype for the Makoko waterfront community. The project was designed to respond to the community’s social and environmental challenges, including flooding and limited infrastructure.

The three-level structure used a distinctive triangular A-frame design, locally sourced wood and bamboo, with recycled plastic barrels supporting the floating platform. It provided spaces for learning, community activities and workshops.

What makes the project special is not simply that it floats.

It shows how architecture can respond to the environment instead of fighting against it.

What Can We Learn From It?

The Makoko Floating School teaches us that good architecture should consider:

  • The environment where a building is located
  • The needs of the people who will use it
  • Available materials and resources
  • Climate and flooding
  • Structural safety and durability
  • The possibility of adapting a design for other uses

The original structure was a prototype, and it later collapsed in 2016. However, the ideas behind the project continued through the development of the Makoko Floating System, which NLÉ describes as a modular floating building system for different uses and locations.

What This Means for Blue Iroko

At Blue Iroko, we believe that architecture and construction should go beyond simply making buildings look beautiful.

The real question is: can the building solve a problem?

From residential buildings to more challenging architectural and construction projects, creative thinking, proper planning and technical knowledge are important in developing solutions that respond to the environment and the needs of the people.

The Makoko Floating School is a reminder that a difficult environment can also become an opportunity for innovative design.
